From the Essay to Literary Fiction: Trieste, Central Europe and the Habsburg Myth

a meeting with Claudio Magris; moderator: Joanna Ugniewska.
The meeting accompanies the ICC anniversary conference Kraków and the World
Free admission, in Italian, with simultaneous Polish translation.

O demokracji, pamięci i Europie Środkowej [On democracy, memory and Central Europe], a volume of essays by Claudio Magris published by the ICC to celebrate its 25th anniversary, will be a springboard for the discussion between the celebrated author and Joanna Ugniewska, his Polish translator. The talk will address a number of issues relevant to Magris and his writing: Central Europe and its legacy (Is it a lesson in irony? Distance? Resistance to ideology? Or, alternatively, a place where a new nationalism is being born?), differences and similarities between Kraków and Trieste (the former’s central and inland position, and the latter’s peripherality and seaside location), once the cities of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The talk will also focus on the lives and works of Singer and Roth, and their experiences which can be seen as complimentary and/or antithetical. Finally, the issue of memory in Magris’s writing will be addressed and its legacy of curse and/or blessing thoroughly discussed.

Claudio Magris – a novelist, essayist, translator, professor of German literature; a longtime lecturer at the Triest University. Claudio Magris, O demokracji, pamięci i Europie Środkowej (On democracy, memory and Central Europe), edited and translated by Joanna Ugniewska, Polish version, Kraków 2016

This anthology of essays by Claudio Magris will reveal to Polish readers a new face of the Italian author: not only an eminent writer and historian of literature, but also an intellectual, journalist and citizen passionately interested in the condition of the community, our modern polis, regardless of whether we define it as our city, our country, or our Europe. The anthology covers half a century of essayistic writings by Magris, from the legendary “Hapsburg Myth in Austrian Modern Literature” (1963) to “Secrets and Non secrets” (2014). The co-author of the selection and translator of the texts never published in Polish before, Joanna Ugniewska grouped the texts into thematic blocks, presenting material which is extremely rich, but also astonishingly homogenous, focusing around a number of key concepts: law, secularism, memory, identity, borderlands, the Habsburg myth.
