The return of art criticism

A-
A+
The Polish section of The International Association of Art Critics (AICA) kindly invites to a Krakow-based debate within the framework of the post-AICA congress, i.e. a companion event to the 44th AICA Congress “White Places – Black Holes” held in Košice (Slovakia).
The International Cultural Centre in Krakow is a co-organiser of the debate.

The participants of the debate: Marek Bartelik (President of AICA International), Anda Rottenberg (Polish Section of AICA), Henry Meyric-Hughes (Honorary President of AICA International), Adriana Almada (Paraguayan Section of AICA), Juraj Carny (Slovak Section of AICA), Richard Gregor (Slovak Section AICA)
and James Elkins (School of the Art Institute in Chicago).

During the debate we will ponder over the consequences of the above-described situation: presence/absence of an art critic in the artistic life, art criticism in the face of other institutions concerned with art, differences between a critic and a curator of contemporary art. We will also pose a question about the role of critical writing against other forms of art criticism available today. Another problem is the existence of “global art criticism,” which sets up standards accepted all over the world as well as its opposite, namely local criticism which draws on local artistic tradition.
